I was raised by a detective. My father was a police officer who spent most of his career in the investigations unit. Just try getting away with something as a kid! There was never a time when he wasn’t a step or two ahead of my sisters and me. He had a keen sense for what didn’t look right and once he dove in, he could unravel a mystery in record time.
As a bookkeeper, I too, come across mysteries in my work. Why is that transaction noted there? A negative number in this account? Where did these numbers even come from? These number puzzles are rarely quick or inexpensive to solve.
Keeping one step ahead of the books isn’t difficult – it’s a mindset. Live the story, record the story. Lather, rinse, repeat on a monthly basis. Clean, up-to-date books are incredibly valuable to any owner and there’s no mystery about that.
